Sue Hockensmith – Board Member and Co-Founder

Sue Hockensmith, along with her husband, Dana, co-founded Pony Bird, Inc. in June of 1977as a home for their son, Philip, along with 9 other residents.  Since then, Sue has continued to serve on the board as a Director and currently serves on various committees.  In the past, she has served as Board President and Vice President.  Her commitment and dedication in respecting individuals with special needs is a true testament to the impact she has made at Pony Bird.

Professionally, she and her husband own Lakeside Children’s Academy in West St. Louis, which Sue manages.  She and Dana have been in the child care business since 1989. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, where she is an active alumni volunteer and supporter.

Sue is very active in the community. She has served on the Board of Education for DeSoto and Parkway School Districts.  She also served as President and Vice President in the Parkway District. She was a President in Region 7, as a member of the Missouri School Board Association.  She is a member of PEO, an educational organization, and she is a Trustee for the Lakes of Big Bend.  As Vice President of the newly formed St. Louis chapter of the Northwest Missouri State Alumni Association, Sue continues to be an advocate for her alma mater.  Sue Hockensmith and Pony Bird were featured in a story in the alumni magazine in 2008.  She is active in Manchester United Methodist Church.

Sue has received many awards for her involvement in the community.  In 2000, she was given the Parkway School Board Pillar Award.  In 2001, she and her husband, Dana, received “The Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to the field of Mental Retardation” from the Missouri State Chapter of American Association on Mental Retardation.

Sue Hockensmith and the entire Hockensmith family have made a tremendous commitment to Pony Bird over the years.   Sue’s family includes husband, Dana; daughter, Laura; daughter and son-in-law, Angela and John Gantzer; grandsons, Noah and Luke; and late son, Philip.
